Snow Plowing & Removal

The Town of Sullivan Highway Department is committed to keeping our roads safe and accessible during winter weather. Our team plows and salts 153 miles of roads, working efficiently to clear snow and ice as quickly as possible.

We operate seven plow routes, each taking an average of 3.5 to 4 hours to complete under normal conditions. During continuous snowfall, our crews reload and restart their routes as needed to maintain safe driving conditions. Please be patient as we work through each route, and remember to drive cautiously during winter storms. Your safety is our top priority.

Mailboxes

To report a damaged mailbox, please call the Highway Department at (315) 687-6031. Sometimes we inadvertently hit mailboxes or the weight of the snow damages them. If we find it’s our responsibility, we will come out asap and repair your mailbox. Please keep in mind we will replace your mailbox with a standard metal box and pressure-treated post. We sometimes have to do a temporary repair until weather permits a replacement.

We are not required by law to repair mailboxes, but we do this as a courtesy to our residents. Please note we do not replace mailboxes on State Roads.

Staking & Lawn Digs

In the Fall, the Town proactively visits our plow routes to stake out challenging spots and clearly demarcate property boundaries. This initiative helps guide our plow operators and minimize unintended lawn damage during winter maintenance. However, if you are particularly concerned about the condition of your lawn, we encourage you to stake your property as an extra precaution.

Should your lawn be inadvertently dug up by our plows, rest assured that we will return in the Spring to repair all affected areas along town roads. There is no need to call our office regarding plow digs during the winter season. Please note that if seeding is required as part of the repair, property owners will be responsible for watering to ensure proper seed germination and lawn recovery.

If you live on a State Road, call New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) (315) 336-0660.

Snow Removal by Contractors & Residents

Adhering to State Law, it is strictly prohibited to discard or plow snow onto the roadway or across it. This regulation is in place to ensure that roads remain clear and safe for all drivers, to maintain proper drainage, and to guarantee unobstructed access for emergency services. Contractors and residents alike must follow these guidelines during snow removal efforts, ensuring that excess snow is properly contained and removed in compliance with legal requirements.

For further information on acceptable snow removal practices, please consult state regulations or contact us.

Winter Street Parking

To ensure efficient snow removal and maintain safe, accessible roads during winter weather, parking is prohibited on all Town Roads from November 1st through April 15th. This regulation allows our plow crews to clear streets thoroughly without obstruction, reducing the risk of accidents and preventing snow buildup around vehicles. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this policy, which helps keep our community safe throughout the winter months.

For more information or questions regarding this policy, please Contact the Highway Department.
